If you followed the 2018 elections, you likely recognize the name Stacey Abrams. Ms. Abrams ran for governor of Georgia, the first African-American woman to ever do so.
She lost by a hair to an opponent who, while running, also oversaw the state’s board of elections. It’s unknown whether this conflict of interest affected the election outcome. What’s most important is that this race turned up the volume on the national conversation about election ethics.
I’m passionate about the right of every voter to be heard, so when I came across Stacey Abrams’s recent TED talk, I wasted no time in listening. Her story is fascinating: raised in poverty, she rose to become a Yale-educated attorney and Minority Leader of the Georgia Legislature.
But the best part was when she talked about what she’s doing now. As one of the country’s top experts on election law, she’s rededicated herself to assuring that every eligible person can vote, and that every vote is counted. Here’s how she put it:
That’s a powerful statement about election fairness…and about so much else.
You already know that life after cancer is never the same. You may still be struggling with physical symptoms, emotional chaos or financial disarray. You may long for the past, when everything seemed stable and peaceful.
But going back isn’t an option.
If your present is in any way painful, then you also “get” the rest of Ms. Abrams’ statement: standing still is not enough.
The good news? There’s always a way forward.
There was a time no one dared to think that anyone but white men could vote. Today we believe all citizens deserve equal representation, and that it’s possible to create a system to guarantee it.
That change happened when standing still wasn’t enough.
How happy are you with the way things are now? How happy would you be if you found yourself in the same place a year from now?
