I was recently honored to tape an episode of The 15-Minute Matrix, a podcast hosted by my colleague, Andrea Nakayama. I really look up to Andrea. She’s super-expert in her field of functional nutrition. She even runs her own training academy for up-and-coming nutritionists.
Andrea wanted to talk with me about the fear that cancer survivors deal with, and its effects on survivors’ bodies and spirits. She’s never had anyone speak about that on her show before. We really got into it – the time just flew by. When we were done I was happy that another large community was going to hear the important message that fear about cancer is very real, and has very real effects on the majority of survivors.
When we were done, Andrea said something to me that I’m going to treasure for a long time: “You really own this.”
Coming from someone who’s such an expert in her own field, that was high praise. She could tell I’ve spent a lot of time around survivors with fear, that I’ve seen all the ways it shows up, and that I’ve invested myself into creating solutions for people who struggle with it. We both recognize that this is a real gap in the conventional care system, which is so focused on medical treatment that it can miss the trauma and fear in the people sitting right in front of them. And that fear can last for years beyond the end of treatment, stealing your hope and your joy.
